Synthetic rattan is built to live outdoors, but Indian weather still tests it harder than most climates - peak summer UV from April to June, then months of monsoon humidity. Furniture that isn't cleaned and checked through both seasons will fade and stiffen years before it should. None of the steps below take more than a few minutes a month.
Dust and wipe the weave with a soft brush or microfibre cloth every couple of weeks, and wash it down with a mild soap and lukewarm water solution once a month. Rinse off all soap residue and let it air-dry before use. Avoid bleach, alcohol-based cleaners or abrasive scrubbers - they strip the UV-stabiliser coating on synthetic rattan and make the strands brittle sooner than normal wear would.
UV-stabilised rattan (REHAU included) is engineered to resist colour fade, but constant direct exposure through May and June will still dull any material faster than shaded use. Where possible, position furniture under a pergola, umbrella or overhang, or move lighter pieces into shade during the hottest weeks. This single habit does more for long-term colour retention than any cleaning product.
Before the rains set in, check that sofa and chair frames have drainage holes or gaps so water doesn't pool inside the seat base, and fit furniture with raised feet or pads so it isn't sitting in standing water on the patio. During heavy, continuous storms, a breathable furniture cover reduces the time cushions and frames stay wet. If cushions do get soaked, dry them promptly rather than leaving them damp - trapped moisture under fabric is what leads to mould and mildew, not the rain itself.
Use quick-dry foam with water-resistant, removable covers wherever furniture is exposed to rain. Wash covers as per their care label and sun-dry them fully before putting them back on. If a set won't be used for an extended period, store cushions indoors rather than leaving them out for the full monsoon.
On powder-coated aluminum frames, rinse off dust and grit periodically so it doesn't scratch the coating, and check bolts and joints twice a year for looseness. Lift furniture rather than dragging it across stone or tile - dragging is one of the most common causes of frame scratches and loosened joints in outdoor sets.
Minor weave damage - a snapped strand or a loose section - can usually be re-woven rather than requiring a full replacement, and a frame that's gone slightly out of alignment can often be reset. Catching either issue early, rather than after a full season of use, keeps the repair small.
Furniture made with genuine REHAU weaving material is built to make this routine easier, since the strands themselves resist fading and cracking for longer.
