Two outdoor sofas can look identical in a showroom and age completely differently outdoors. The difference usually isn't the weave pattern or the frame - it's the rattan strand itself. Here's what separates a branded material like REHAU from generic synthetic rattan, and why it matters more once furniture is actually outside.
Synthetic rattan is an extruded plastic strand, typically HDPE or PE-based, woven by hand or machine around a metal frame to imitate the look of natural cane. The strand's resistance to sun, rain and temperature swings depends almost entirely on what's mixed into the plastic before it's extruded - UV stabilisers, colour pigments and the wall thickness of the strand itself.
REHAU is a German materials manufacturer that produces synthetic rattan profiles specifically engineered for outdoor furniture, with UV-stabilising additives and colour pigment mixed through the strand rather than sprayed on as a surface coating. That distinction matters more than it sounds: a surface-coated strand shows a lighter core the moment it's scratched or nicked, while pigment-through material keeps a consistent colour all the way through, so scuffs and years of sun don't reveal a different shade underneath.
Cheaper rattan often looks fine for the first year, then fades unevenly - lighter on sun-facing surfaces, patchy where cushions or elbows create friction. That's typically a coating issue rather than a fundamental flaw in the plastic. Pigment-through material fades far more slowly and evenly because there's no separate coating layer to wear off.
UV exposure gradually breaks down the polymer chains in any plastic strand; stabiliser additives are what slow that process down. Rattan without adequate stabilisers turns brittle within a few years, especially at weave joints under constant tension, and starts cracking or snapping under normal use. Properly stabilised material like REHAU is built to hold its flexibility for years longer under the same conditions.
Ask the manufacturer for the material's brand and spec sheet rather than just "synthetic rattan" as a description. If you can see a cut cross-section of the strand, consistent colour all the way through (not just on the surface) is a good sign. Price is also a reasonable proxy - certified material genuinely costs more to source, so furniture priced well below the market for a claimed premium material is worth questioning.
Furniture in uncertified rattan often needs re-weaving or replacement within 3-4 outdoor seasons in Indian conditions. Furniture built with REHAU-grade material is designed to hold its colour and flexibility for significantly longer, which usually works out cheaper over the life of the piece even though the upfront cost is higher.
